For the Love of Polka Dots

Love em or hate em, they are a classic that can be made sexy or cute - depending on the attitude you give them. I'm talking about polka dots, and EVERYONE can wear them. They're everywhere this spring and can sometimes be tricky depending on the pattern. Too much and you'll end up resembling something like Minnie Mouse. Not good.

Small dots can be paired with solids (bright colors a must!) and are safe for everyone who wants to get that retro edge without going overboard. I think they are best done on sheer wispy fabrics. It is such a romantic look.

Large dots have to be toned down a bit for public display. (UNLESS you are a bombshell pinup queen and 'animated' is your goal!) A good way to do this is simply by layering. An oversized cardigan or trenchcoat should do the trick. The green and white dress seen here by Jean Paul Gaultier for Target ($34 in store now!!) is my fave for this spring. It has lingerie detailing and black lace trim that set it off.
